José Belizán expertise field is mainly focused on reproductive, maternal and child health. He became Doctor of Medicine in 1970 in “la Universidad Nacional de Rosario” in Argentina, and continued with two Ph.Ds in Biology of Reproduction in the same university and “la Universidad del Salvador Buenos Aires”, also in Argentina.
He shares currently his time between four major posts: He is a scientific officer since 2004 in the Department of Mother & Child Health Research at the School of Public Health, University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. For 16 years now he has also been Adjunct Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine of Tulane University in the Epidemiology Department, USA. José Belizán is also the International Director of the Fogarty (National Institute of Health (NIH), USA) fellowship site in Argentina.
Throughout his career, José Belizán has always been involved in a great variety of organizations like World Health Organization, PAHO/WHO; Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD/NIH), USA; Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) (PAHO/WHO), Guatemala; Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health, Geneva.
He received five highly recognized honors, among which the “Condecoration of the Heraldry Order of Cristóbal Colon” in the degree of Knight, granted by the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, on 15 March 2000. This honor is given to those who have provided eminent services to the world and prominent services to the unification and development of the countries of America.
José Belizán also shares his scientific and research expertise as active member of the BioMed Central (BMC) and Springer-Nature Open editorial team. These structures offer researchers from all areas of science a place to publish open access in more than 300 journals and books. José Belizán himself published more than 250 articles as author and co-author in books and in peer review journals, from which 224 are indexed in PubMed. It includes publications in journals of high impact factor in medicine, like the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) or the British Medical Journal.
