Background :
Michael has taught on the Masters in Psychoanalytic Studies since 2001. His PhD, finished in 2002, was undertaken jointly with the Department of English Literature and the Centre for Psychotherapeutic Studies (now part of ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield and focused on postmodern theory and culture, British psychoanalysis and magic realist literature. In addition to his PhD, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
His current research continues dialogue between British psychoanalysis, particularly Klein and Winnicott, and postmodern, late-capitalist culture. He is also working on a Foucaultian history of psychoanalysis and literary and cultural criticism, focussing on how power is exercised through these discourses. Further research interests include self-harm and the role of primary processes in teaching and learning.
He has presented many papers at conferences and university seminars, written reviews for Psychoanalytic Studies and The British Journal of Psychiatry and appeared on BBC Radio 3´s show, The Verb. Michael was born in Toronto, Canada and has lived in the UK for eleven years.
