Languages

A certain proficiency in Europubhealth teaching languages is required

A certain proficiency in Europubhealth teaching languages is required for attendance on the this European Masters course, depending on the training pathways:

    • English
    • English + French
    • Spanish + French + English
    • Spanish + English

The following languages of instruction will be used for tests, work, examinations and for reading materials during the course:

Year 1 (Semesters 1 and 2)

  • Basic acquisitions
    • Granada : Spanish (Some of the documents may also be in English)
    • Sheffield : English
  • Module: "Global dimensions of Public Health"
    • Krakow : English (From 2009 this integration module should take place in Rennes (to be confirmed by mid September))

Year 2 (Semesters 3 and 4)

  •  Specialisation
    • Advanced Public Health Methods - Copenhagen : English
    • Health Management - Granada : Spanish
    • Quality Improvement - Granada : Spanish
    • Health Economics and Financial Management - Krakow : English
    • Social and Health Protection - Krakow : English
    • Environmental Health - Rennes : French*
    • Law, Health and Ethics - Rennes : French

* From 2009 this specialisation might be taught in English. To be confirmed by 20th September 2008

Language requirements

The levels of language requirements correspond to the Common European Framework of reference scale (CEF)

Common European Framework of reference scale

Year 1

    • English (at the University of Sheffield )


A level equivalent to at least C1 level on the Common European Framework of reference scale (CEF) is required:

      • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
        • Paper-based: 600
        • Computer-based: 250
        • Internet-based-test: 100

    • Spanish (at the Andalusian School of Public Health)


Fluent written and spoken Spanish, certified by either a score of at least a level equivalent to B2 on the Common European Framework of reference scale (CEF); students with scores C1 in Spanish (or equivalent) will be preferred.

      • DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera): intermediate level

A minimum level in English equivalent to a B2 level on the Common European Framework of reference scale (CEF) is required at the start of the module in June/July of the academic year.  Students who choose to follow the course at Granada in the first year and at Rennes in the second year will be entitled to supplementary English lessons during the first year.

Year 2

    • DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) et DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française): B2 of the new grid (or second level : A5 + A6)

Language support

The six Europubhealth consortium partners offer language courses. These are optionnal and are not awarded ECTS credits.

During the first year

  • During the first year, students coming to Sheffield are offered a course in English for Public health/science. Students registered in Granada will have the possibility of following culture/civilisation courses in Spanish. Courses will also be provided for those wishing to improve their level in English.

During the second year

  • In Copenhagen or Krakow: "survival language courses" in Danish or Polish
  • In Granda or Rennes: Spanish or French courses
