This module will cover epidemiological concepts, the main four epidemiological research designs and relevant statistical tests. Epidemiological concepts include those of causation, confounding and bias and the research designs will include descriptive, cohort, case-control and intervention studies (including randomised control trials). Statistical methods will cover the use, understanding and interpretation of multiple and logistic regression and survival analyses.

Health information refers to the routine sources of information which are available to support public health research and practice. The module will cover population censuses, basic demography, morbidity and mortality data, calculation of rates and ratios for measuring health status, classification of diseases and notification systems for births, deaths and specific diseases. The strengths, uses, interpretation and limitations of routine health information will be addressed. The module will also include the study of the epidemiology of a few specific diseases which have a significant impact on the health of populations.
