matters and to meet their fellow students. This was only an introduction
before the start of the actual course which will deal with the
basic issues of public health.
The
36 students are divided as follows:
Sheffield:
22 students
Granada: 14 students
The
students come from 19 countries: Albania, Bolivia, China,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ghana, India, Malawi, Myanmar, Nigeria,

The
2006-2008 students get together in Krakow |
|
| |
|
The
first integration module took place in Krakow (Poland) at the
Jagiellonian University - Institute of Public health from
the 25th June to 22nd July 2007. For the first time, all the students
from Sheffield and Granada came together to work on Global Health.
Students
had lectures and workshops given by staff from the consortium
universities and visiting international experts on a wide range
of issues.
In parallel, students
worked together on transnational public health questions in six
multicultural groups and were set the task to
reflect on and design strategies to tackle transnational public
health problems.
Learning
to work together
As
the name suggests, one of the main roles of the module, was to
favour the integration and working together of students coming
from the two first year universities Sheffield and Andalusian
School of Public Health. To this end several activities were organised
. One of these was the New Commons Game organised by the staff
from the University of Warsaw Department of Sociology, aimed at
exploring what is involved in collaborative working.
Exploring
cultural differences and simililarities
Other activities within the session on Culture and Health gave
the students the opportunity to explore cultural differences
in relation to public health issues. In particular they were
helped to understand how one’s own cultural background,
in the phrase of Umberto Eco “our background books”
may influence how we perceive and react to social phenomena
and actions. Read

Scholars
and global health group
The
Erasmus Mundus programme offers grants to third country scholars
(teachers) who would like to be involved in research and teaching
on the Europubhealth Masters Course. Accordingly in Krakow three
experienced professionals took up this opportunity and tutored
students in intercultural and interdisciplinary global health
group.
The following scholars participated:
- Elisaveta Stikova, PhD in medical science,
Professor at the Medical Faculty of University “St. Cyril
and Methodius”, School of Dentistry and School for Education,
FYROM.
-Mario Parada Lezcano, graduated in the field
of Medicine, Sociology, Public Health and Management, Modern
Epidemiology and Planning. President of the Commission on Accreditation
to the School of Medicine at the University of Valparaiso, Chile.
- Sergio Meresman, specialist in the field
of health and inclusion. Lecturer on following issues: Community
Health and Health Promotion included in Master courses in Uruguay,
Argentina and Spain.
Feedback
from Sergio Meresman
"The diverse backgrounds, disciplinary knowledge and international
experiences of the students, provide the integration module
with a very rich capital which the integration module should
be further exploiting. Learning from peers is common in a postgraduate
environment and should be encouraged and facilitated by the
integration module. Part of the program should provide students
with an opportunity to exchange what they have learned in the
Europubhealth´s first year as well as their professional
and cultural backgrounds. "

Developping
multicultural and interdisciplinary team working
The
students are divided up into 6 multicultural groups
of 5-6 students: each Europubhealth scholar having
responsibility for 2 groups.
In 2007 each group of students chose to work on one of the following
transnational public health issues:
- Health
promotion in a school setting
- Social
determinants of HIV/AIDS
- Gender
and equity in health
- Food
safety
- Environmental
health
- inclusive
health services for women with disabilities

The
groups contextualised the issues in a specific region or country
and had the task of preparing an overview of the question
highlighting good examples of regional and national practice.
Subsequently
in a simulation the students representing an NGO seeking funds
from a supranational body made a presentation of their findings
to a panel of Europubhealth lecturers. The panel playing the
role of experts quizzed the students on their strategic choices
and the proposed implementation of their projects.
This
training system necessitates a drawing on public health theory
acquired during the first year of studies, litterature searches,
an original thinking about a public health question, a team
working sensitive to cultural and language differences, writing
skills but above all oral communication skills
Feedback
from Cesar
Eduardo Wong Alcazar,
Europubhealth student
"The
module gave the students the opportunity not only to acquire
a theoretical knowledge, but to learn from personal and life
experiences from others (and other countries.
The group work constituted an interesting challenge for some
students in terms of adapting to others (time and working differences)
and accepting/respecting other cultures and behaviors; a positive
impact, becoming more flexible, for the future of Public Health
professionals.
Although both groups (Sheffield and Granada) undertook the same
program, there were some expectations and differences that were
shared (language, content of courses, methodology) and let make
fruitful comparisons. The idea of sharing the same environment
for living and developing the module, permitted the students
to get closer and share and learn from others, not only related
to public health issues (content) but to personal experiences
(doing the shopping together, playing sports, cooking, partying,
etc)
Finally, exposing both groups to each other and a completely
unknown city and organisation system (still Europe but different
in so many ways to England and Spain), was a challenge that
requires adaptation and flexibility".
