Santé environnementale et santé au travail

In many countries, more or less developed, health threats for the population have changed in the past decades. While large epidemics, generally water-related, have not yet disappeared, plublic health professionals and decision-makers are now facing new challenges.
This often concerns so-called “weak‿ risks, mainly linked to chemistry or physics, as opposed to epidemic and infectious risks. Threat awareness and knowledge, risk management and response to the general public need to call upon specific methods and tools.

The “public health and environment‿ specialization intends to train environmental health experts, able to :

  • Have the required disciplinary knowledge to identify and assess risks,
  • Master relevant concepts, methods and tools used in the environmental health field,
  • Use the appropriate data to analyse situations and take part in the decision-making process.

This specialization is intended for students with a strong scientific culture and the ability to assimilate new disciplinary knowledge : e.g. graduate students in medicine, pharmacy, veterninary sciences, biology, toxicology, chemistry, physics, hydrology, environmental sciences, civil engineering …

Goals

The general objective of the specialisation is to train health professionals to identify, analyze and manage health risks related to environment.

Openings

Students attending this specialization may expect positions in the public and private sector, as well as NGOs :

  • In the private sector : in companies in charge of nuisance and pollution assessment on environment and human health, as well as companies in charge of public service missions (water supply, sanitation, waste treatment, …) or industrial groups rejecting various materials.
  • In the public sector : design and implementation of public health and environment protection policies at central and local level, specifically in countries where issues have emerged recently, and where legislation and organization are not appropriate. Graduates will also take part in the development and dissemination of public expertise, i.e. in universities, specialized agencies or international bodies.
  • In NGOs : Graduates may take part in programmes for populations exposed to health risks (especially chronic ones), because of the degradation of the environment and habitat.
