  • Stephen graduated in 1991 with a degree in Mathematics and Economics. This was followed by a PGCE at Keele and an MSc in Medical Statistics and Information Technology. His first job following completion of the masters' degree in 1993 was as an Information Analyst at the Oxford Regional Health Authority Cancer Registry. Stephen joined ScHARR in January 1995 as a medical statistician. In January 2004, Stephen completed his PhD on the use of bootstrap methods for estimating sample size and analysing health-related quality of life outcomes.

    Current activities:
    Design, analysis and report writing of various health service research (HSR) projects, including RCTs, observational studies and economic evaluations alongside clinical trials. Current experience includes the analysis of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) outcome measures, computer intensive methods, study design and sample size determination, statistical consultancy, and teaching medical statistics.

    Research interests:
    - Design, Analysis and Interpretation of studies with Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) outcome measures.
    - Computer intensive methods – the bootstrap.
    - Health Services Research and Technology Assessment
    - Economic Evaluations alongside clinical trials.
    - Study design and sample size determination.
